Disney World Dress Code: Clothes, Costumes and the Age-14 Rule

Adults and teens age 14 and older must skip costumes on ordinary park days. Younger children have more room, while separately ticketed parties use their own costume rules.

The short answer: Shirts and shoes are required at Disney World. Guests ages 14 and older cannot wear costumes during an ordinary visit to the theme parks, water parks or ESPN Wide World of Sports. Children age 13 and younger may dress up, with tighter rules for masks. Selected separately ticketed parties make conditional exceptions for adults.

Start with the age-14 line

The costume rule splits guests by age. Guests age 13 and younger may wear costumes. Once a guest is 14, costumes are prohibited during ordinary visits to the theme parks, water parks and ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The age rule applies to the outfit, not the character's age. A 15-year-old dressed as a child character still falls under the rule for guests 14 and older.

Everyday clothes still have boundaries

Proper attire includes a shirt and shoes. Clothes that drag on the ground are prohibited in the theme parks and water parks. Multiple layers may be searched, which matters for bulky jackets, costume-like overlays and outfits with several concealed pieces.

Clothing or visible tattoos considered objectionable can lead to refused admission or removal. Profanity, offensive pictures, excessive torn fabric or an outfit that exposes too much skin can create a problem at the entrance. The final admission decision belongs to Disney.

Water parks need a separate clothing check

The adult costume ban still applies at Disney's water parks. Swimwear rules and slide restrictions depend on the activity, so check the water park's current guidance before bringing buckles, exposed metal or a loose cover-up onto a slide.

Character-inspired clothes are the practical adult option

An adult can build an outfit from normal clothes that echo a character's colors or details. A purple shirt with green shorts may suggest Ariel. A red polka-dot top and black skirt can nod to Minnie. The safer version still looks like regular clothing, without a character mask, floor-length cape, full gown, padded armor or a head-to-toe replica.

There is no outfit formula that guarantees admission. If the result reads as a full costume, The outfit can still be treated as a costume. Keep the silhouette ordinary, make the shoes suitable for a long day, and avoid anything that blocks walkways or another guest's view.

Separately ticketed parties can allow adult costumes

Selected separately ticketed events are exceptions. The current list includes Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and Disney Jollywood Nights. Admission to one event does not turn the rest of the day into a costume period. Follow the rules for the exact event and the hours attached to that ticket.

At events where adult costumes are permitted, the outfit must remain family appropriate. Adults cannot pose for photographs or sign autographs as if they were Disney characters. Costumes cannot drag on the ground, and Layered outfits may be inspected.

Rules can change by event. Before packing the expensive cape, open Disney's official costume and dress guidance and the page for your specific party.

Masks, capes and prop weapons get extra scrutiny

Adult costume masks are not permitted, even at the named parties. The medical-mask exception is separate from costume permission. For children age 13 and younger, the face cannot be completely covered, the eyes must be fully visible and peripheral vision must stay open.

At events that permit adult costumes, capes may reach only to the waist. Real weapons are prohibited. A prop also needs to be free of sharp points and must not look enough like a real weapon to cause confusion. A plastic accessory can still fail if it is unusually realistic.

ItemBest planning choice
CapeKeep it at waist length for a costume event and completely off the ground.
MaskAdults should leave costume masks home. For children, keep the face and vision open.
Sword, blaster or other propChoose a soft, obviously fictional item without sharp edges. Skip anything realistic.
Layered outfitExpect a possible search and make every layer easy to remove.
Long skirt or robeHem it well above the ground so it cannot trail or catch underfoot.

Pack for heat, rain and a possible outfit change

Central Florida can turn a clever outfit into a portable sauna before lunch. Use breathable layers, walking shoes and a bag that can hold the pieces you remove. A compact backup outfit is useful when a child becomes tired of a costume or an entrance check finds a problem.

  • Photograph the full outfit before the trip, including props and footwear.
  • Test whether the wearer can see to both sides, climb stairs and sit safely.
  • Keep a regular shirt and shorts in the room, car or park bag.
  • Check the event page again shortly before departure.
  • Use a locker for removable pieces that become awkward in queues.

Restaurant dress standards are separate from park admission. Signature dining and resort venues may set their own expectations, so check the restaurant page when a meal is part of the plan.
