Disney World Split Stays: Bags, Hotel Changes and Transfer-Day Plans

Move the bags once, carry the right essentials and plan a transfer day that works before the second room is ready.

A good Disney World split stay separates the luggage plan from the people plan. On checkout morning, you hand off eligible bags at the first hotel, keep a small day bag, and head out. Your group still needs its own route to the park or second hotel, and the day should work even if the new room and transferred luggage are not ready at the same time.

The tradeoff is simple: changing hotels costs packing time and adds another check-in. It can still pay off when the second resort puts you near a different park, gives you a few nights at a hotel you could not justify for the whole trip, or makes the resort itself part of the vacation. For a short trip, the move may eat more time than it saves.

Decide whether the second hotel earns the move

Start with the reason for changing resorts. “We want to try another hotel” is perfectly valid, but put a real benefit beside the extra packing. A move from one transportation area to another can change which park is easiest to reach. A short stay at a more expensive resort can also make sense when you plan to use its pool, restaurants and grounds instead of treating it as a place to sleep.

Count the friction too. Everyone packs twice. You may be without a room for part of the day. Bags have to be counted at handoff and again at arrival. If your group needs a midday nap, refrigerated supplies, mobility equipment or frequent access to luggage, confirm the workable arrangement before booking.

For the broader hotel decision, use our Disney World hotel guide. The split should solve a specific trip problem or add resort time your group will actually use.

Treat the stay as two reservations

A split stay means separate hotel reservations. Keep both confirmation numbers where more than one adult can reach them. Check the guest names, dates and room type on each reservation, and make sure the first checkout date matches the second check-in date.

Then verify the current arrival and luggage details for both selected hotels. Bell Services is available at many Disney resort locations, but unusual items and special storage needs can change the plan. If either reservation is outside the Disney resort hotel system, do not assume the same transfer assistance applies.

Room requests belong to their respective reservations. A request at the first hotel does not carry into the second. Complete any available online check-in steps for each stay and keep the second hotel address handy for the luggage handoff and your own transportation.

Pack the night before, then keep one bag out

Do the full repack before bed. Label every suitcase with a name and mobile number, remove old airline tags, and count the pieces. Take a quick photo of the group of bags. It is much easier to say “we handed over four pieces” when you have the number and a picture.

Your day bag should cover the hours when you may have neither a hotel room nor the checked luggage. Keep medication, identification, reservation details, chargers, valuables, park tickets or MagicBands, and anything needed before bedtime. Add sunscreen, swimwear or a change of clothes if the plan needs them. Do not hand over an item you may urgently need during the day.

Confirm the transfer at Bell Services on checkout morning

Current Disney guidance says Bell Services can help move luggage from one Disney resort hotel to another. Bring the bags to Bell Services at the first hotel and ask whether your exact destination and items qualify. Confirm the destination hotel name, the number of pieces and the current pickup instructions at the second resort.

Keep the claim receipt. Photograph it before leaving the desk, then save the original somewhere dry. Ask for the current timing guidance, but do not organize dinner, a flight or medication access around a promised delivery hour. Luggage assistance can spare you from carrying suitcases across the property; it does not make the room-ready gap disappear.

If Bell Services cannot take an item, choose a direct transportation plan that can carry it with your group. Refrigerated goods, groceries, mobility equipment and other unusual items need explicit confirmation rather than an assumption.

Move your group separately

The luggage handoff is not passenger transportation. Decide where the group is going after checkout and how everyone will get there. Disney transportation may work when your next stop is a theme park or Disney Springs. A hotel-to-hotel trip often requires a transfer, so compare the actual route with a direct taxi or rideshare before the morning of the move.

If you plan to visit a park, leave the first hotel with everything needed for park entry and the full day. If you plan to visit the new resort first, confirm where guests can wait and what areas are available before room readiness. Our Disney World transportation guide explains the main bus, boat, monorail and Skyliner connections.

Build a day that does not depend on the second room

The cleanest transfer day has one main activity between luggage handoff and the second check-in. A park day works well because the bags can travel while you are elsewhere. A meal and time at the new resort can work too, provided everyone has what they need and the resort can accommodate the plan before the room is ready.

Avoid stacking fragile reservations around an assumed bag arrival. If the group will swim, carry swimwear and a dry change. If a child needs a nap or a traveler needs private access to medical supplies, keep those needs with you or make a direct transfer with the luggage. The Disney World arrival and departure guide covers room-readiness gaps in more detail.

Check the room and every bag at the second hotel

Watch the hotel account or app for room-ready information, but use the front desk when the reservation needs attention. Once you reach the second hotel, ask Bell Services how to retrieve transferred luggage. The bags and the room may become available at different times.

Count every piece before leaving Bell Services. If something is missing, show the receipt and the photo from the first hotel. Give the cast member the origin hotel, destination hotel, handoff time, bag count and a clear description of the missing item. That record is far more useful than trying to reconstruct the morning from memory.

A workable split-stay transfer day

Night beforeFinish packing, label and count bags, photograph the set, and confirm both reservations.Medication, identification, valuables, chargers and next-day clothes.
Checkout morningAsk Bell Services to confirm eligibility, destination and current instructions. Keep the receipt.Every item needed until bedtime, plus park or pool gear for the day.
Between hotelsTravel separately from the luggage. Visit a park, eat, or use an available resort area without depending on room access.Reservation numbers, destination address and the luggage receipt.

This is a sequence, not a timetable. The useful anchors are checkout, the luggage handoff, your independent transportation and the second hotel's room status. Leave the hours between them flexible.

Disney World split-stay questions

Will Disney move luggage between resort hotels during a split stay?

Current Disney guidance says Bell Services can help move luggage from one Disney resort hotel to another. Confirm that your exact reservations and bags qualify at the first hotel on checkout morning.

Do I ride with the luggage to the next Disney hotel?

No. Plan a separate route for everyone in your group. Resort transportation can involve a park or Disney Springs transfer, while a taxi or rideshare can provide a direct hotel-to-hotel trip.

When will transferred bags arrive at the second hotel?

Do not build the day around a promised delivery time. Ask Bell Services for the current estimate, keep the receipt, and carry everything you need until both the room and bags are available.

What should stay in my split-stay day bag?

Keep medication, identification, travel documents, chargers, valuables, park items, and anything needed before bedtime. Add swim gear or a change of clothes only if the day plan calls for it.

Can Bell Services transfer groceries or refrigerated items?

Confirm those items directly with both hotels before checkout. Rules can differ by item, and a standard luggage transfer should not be treated as refrigerated storage.

Is a Disney World split stay worth it?

It can be when the second hotel meaningfully changes the trip, such as putting you near a different park or giving the group time at a resort it wants to experience. It is a weaker choice for a short visit or a group that dislikes repacking.
