A chemical emergency in Garden Grove kept evacuation orders in place across part of west Anaheim on Friday, May 22, adding a safety and travel concern for visitors moving around the Disneyland area.

Garden Grove identified the incident site as GKN Aerospace / MMA, 12122 Western Ave. The evacuation zone ran from Ball Road to Trask Avenue and from Valley View Street to Dale Street. In Anaheim, about 1,100 homes west of the resort area were under evacuation orders near Dale Street, Valley View Street, Holder Street, Cerritos Avenue, and Ball Road.

Disneyland Resort remained outside the evacuation zone Friday, according to the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. CBS Los Angeles reported by 8:13 p.m. PDT that authorities had evacuated about 44,000 people across Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.

By Friday evening, firefighters had cooled the tank enough to stop an active gas release, Orange County Fire Authority Chief Craig Covey told CBS Los Angeles. The tank still had not been secured, and crews were working on ways to depressurize it without a spill or explosion.

The emergency affected part of Anaheim and several west Orange County routes. Anaheim directed affected residents to a care and reception center at Savanna High School, 301 N. Gilbert St. Garden Grove and Anaheim also told residents to avoid the area, follow evacuation orders, use city hotline numbers for emergency information, and monitor city and public-safety channels.
