Potter helped support the Allied advance across Europe after D-Day, governed the Panama Canal Zone and directed operations for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Walt Disney hired him in 1965 to oversee infrastructure construction for the Florida project that became Walt Disney World.
Potter became a Disney Legend in 1997. The General Joe Potter ferry still carries guests across Seven Seas Lagoon to Magic Kingdom.
