Rider Switch lets two groups take turns when someone cannot ride or cannot wait outside the queue alone. Party A waits in the regular queue first. Party B waits elsewhere, then uses the return entrance without repeating the standard line.
Walt Disney World currently offers Rider Switch at 22 attractions across all four parks. The service is free. You still need valid park admission, and every rider must meet the attraction's boarding requirements.
Set up the switch before anyone gets in line
The five-step Rider Switch process
- Bring the entire group to the attraction entrance and ask a Cast Member to set up Rider Switch.
- Split into Party A and Party B. Party A enters the queue first. Party B waits outside with the person who is not riding.
- The Cast Member scans the admission media or tickets for Party B and gives return instructions.
- After Party A exits, Party B returns to the entrance the Cast Member assigned.
- The Cast Member scans Party B again. Up to two people enter through the Rider Switch return entrance without waiting in the standard queue.
- Second-party limitParty B can have no more than two riders.
- Solo waiting adultIf Party B has one rider, one person from Party A may ride again with them.
- Waiting locationParty B may find shade, a snack, or another nearby activity while Party A rides.
- Ask at the entranceReturn locations and attraction procedures can vary. Get the instructions before the first group enters.

Lightning Lane does not cover the second party automatically
Rider Switch changes who waits outside. It does not create a free Lightning Lane reservation. Every rider age 3 or older needs the appropriate Lightning Lane pass when both parties want to avoid the standby queue.
Tell the Cast Member that Party A is using Lightning Lane when the switch is set up. Party B's admission media is scanned for Rider Switch, but its riders still need their own Lightning Lane access for that attraction. If Party A uses standby, only Party A waits in standby. Party B uses the assigned return entrance after the handoff.
Plan the longest standby rides first
Rider Switch prevents the second adult from repeating the standard queue. That saves the most time where standby already runs long. CrowdLevels measured these operating standby averages across the latest 90 days:
| Attraction | 90-day standby average | Rider Switch call |
|---|---|---|
| Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets | 64.4 minutes | Set up the switch before the first group enters. A missed setup can add about an hour for the second adult. |
| Slinky Dog Dash | 62.7 minutes | Use Rider Switch or Lightning Lane. This is a rough standby line to repeat. |
| Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance | 48.5 minutes | Keep the non-rider out of the long queue, then let Party B use the return entrance. |
| Seven Dwarfs Mine Train | 47.7 minutes | Handle the scan first. The waiting adult should not join standby later from scratch. |
| Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run | 31.6 minutes | Rider Switch keeps one companion with the non-rider. Single Rider is a separate option for adults willing to split. |
| Expedition Everest | 26.2 minutes | Use Rider Switch near midday. Late-day standby can be short enough that timing matters less. |
CrowdLevels generated the 90-day figures on July 21, 2026. They measure posted standby waits while each ride was operating. Rider Switch return waits are not included, so the numbers show the cost of missing the switch, not a promised amount of time saved.
Rider Switch and Single Rider solve different problems
Single Rider fills empty seats and usually separates everyone who uses it. Rider Switch keeps an adult with the non-rider, then lets the waiting party take its turn.
| Choose Rider Switch | Choose Single Rider |
|---|---|
| Someone cannot ride or cannot wait outside alone. | Every rider meets the requirements and can navigate the exit alone. |
| One adult needs to stay with a child or another non-rider. | The group is comfortable splitting into different ride vehicles. |
| You want one person from Party A to accompany a solo Party B rider. | You care more about a shorter line than sitting together or choosing a role. |
Disney World Rider Switch questions
Does the whole family need to be at the entrance?
Yes. Bring the entire group to the attraction entrance before Party A enters the queue. The Cast Member needs to see the party and scan the riders in Party B.
How many people can ride in Party B?
Two riders. If only one person is waiting to ride, one person from Party A may ride again with them.
Can you use Rider Switch when a child is tall enough but scared?
Yes, when the child does not plan to ride and cannot wait outside the queue alone. Explain the situation to the Cast Member at the entrance.
Can Rider Switch help with a service animal?
Yes. The service can be used when an animal cannot board an attraction or the guest does not want to use the provided kennel.
