Talks for an ongoing The Muppet Show series are not active at the moment, Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva reports, citing sources. The September 10 report leaves open the possibility that discussions could restart.
The sticking point is the premise for a continuing show. Andreeva reports that Disney, The Muppets Studio and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures have had difficulty agreeing on a format they all support.
Deadline reports that the February special was intended to serve as a potential launchpad for a series. No series pickup has followed, and the report concerns the status of that effort rather than the cancellation of an ordered season.
Andreeva leaves open the possibility that the Emmy wins could renew momentum toward a format the parties agree on. For now, the reported pause in talks offers no timetable for more episodes.
Four awards for the 2026 special
The 2026 Disney+ special The Muppet Show won four awards on September 5 during the first night of the 78th Creative Arts Emmys.
The special won for production design, writing, picture editing and pre-recorded variety special.
Executive producer Seth Rogen accepted the pre-recorded variety special award on the 50th anniversary of the original Muppet Show premiere.
The new special premiered February 4 on ABC and Disney+, with Sabrina Carpenter and Maya Rudolph joining the Muppets. It was produced by 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures.
Disney reported nearly 8 million viewers across ABC and Disney+ in the special’s first eight days.
