Coven Academy tells its first season across 21 short chapters that add up to more than five hours. The series arrives on Freeform and streaming this week with a cast of teenage witches, warlocks and their teachers.
Set in New Orleans, the story centers on Briar, Sasha and Tegan. The three students form a coven at a magic boarding school while carrying secrets of their own.
A full season in short chapters
Creator Tim Federle said the shorter format did not change how the writing team built the season. Watched together, the chapters play as a single long story with room for the students, teachers and their relationships to develop.
Briar arrives from New York looking for answers about her mother’s death. Miss Graves, the head of the school, assigns her to form a coven with Sasha and Tegan. The story also follows warlock student Jake and Mr. Cole, a teacher played by Devon Sawa.
Who stars in Coven Academy
Malina Weissman plays Briar, Jordan Leftwich plays Sasha and Ora Duplass plays Tegan. Malachi Barton plays Jake, while Tiffani Thiessen leads the school as Miss Graves.
The series premieres Thursday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT on Freeform. The full season becomes available Friday, Oct. 2, on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand.
