Disney Animation built the magic in Hexed to look different for every witch and wizard, and Billie Doe’s rare ability to fly puts her directly in Queen Celeste’s path.
Director Jason Hand told D23 that magic in Hexe comes from within each character. Its color and form change with the person casting it. For Billie, that means small sparks can burst from her hands, land on a surface and fizzle out.
The filmmakers worked out separate visual rules for Billie, her mother Alice and Queen Celeste. Producer Yvett Merino said the effects team had to define what each character’s magic looks like rather than giving the whole world one shared visual language.
Billie’s Flight Makes Her a Target
Hand also revealed that Queen Celeste is the only other flying witch in Hexe. Billie’s arrival therefore creates a direct competition with the ruler, who sees the teenager as a threat to her hold on the realm.
Jodie Foster voices Queen Celeste, while Hailee Steinfeld voices Billie. Hexed opens exclusively in theaters November 25, 2026.
