ABC station owners are pushing back on Disney’s expanded distribution plan for Super Bowl LXI, worried that the extra viewing options could split the audience and reduce local advertising revenue, according to CNBC.
The February 14, 2027 game will air through the traditional ESPN and ABC presentation and stream on Disney+. Disney is also planning alternate telecasts on ESPN2, ESPNU and NFL Network, with access through the ESPN App.
That gives viewers several ways to watch the same game. For local ABC stations, the concern is that each additional option may pull viewers away from the broadcast audience tied to local ad sales.
Affiliate board is discussing the issue
CNBC reported that the matter is being discussed by the ABC affiliate board, which represents local station executives in talks with the network. It remains unclear whether affiliates will receive compensation.
Disney said broader distribution gives fans more ways to watch and described ABC affiliates as important partners. The company also pointed to recent Super Bowl streams on Tubi and Peacock as examples of the industry’s move beyond a single broadcast outlet.
