Disney Cruise Line Luggage: What to Keep in Your Carry-On

Checked bags may not reach your stateroom until a few hours after the ship leaves port. Keep the day’s essentials with you so embarkation can start without waiting for luggage.

The short answer: keep passports, check-in items, medication, valuables and anything needed for the first afternoon in a carry-on that stays with you. Hand over the rest for delivery to your stateroom.

Pack for two separate parts of embarkation day

Treat the carry-on as the bag for the terminal and your first hours aboard. Your other luggage can hold clothes, shoes, dinner attire and toiletries you will not need right away.

That split matters because checked bags may arrive a few hours after departure. You could be eating lunch, exploring the ship or heading to the pool before the larger bags appear at the stateroom.

What stays with you

Documents

Passports or other required citizenship documents, plus anything needed for check-in and embarkation.

Medication

Keep medicine in its original container. Add extra prescription glasses or contact lenses.

Valuables

Carry cash, cards, jewelry, cameras and personal electronics rather than placing them in checked luggage.

First-afternoon gear

Pack sunscreen, a hat, a swimsuit and a cover-up if you want to use the pool before luggage arrives.

Once the stateroom is ready, move important items to the room safe. Keep medication where it remains easy to reach.

What can wait in the checked bag

Use the larger bag for the rest of the trip: most clothing, dinner outfits, extra shoes and ordinary toiletries. If you would be frustrated to lose access to an item for several hours, move it to the carry-on.

Airline rules and cruise rules are separate. A bag accepted for a flight can still contain something that is restricted on the ship, so review both sets of requirements before leaving home.

Items to remove before the terminal

Leave electric irons, clothes steamers, extension cords, power strips, multi-plugs and surge protectors at home. Homemade, precooked, perishable and open foods are prohibited. Factory-sealed nonperishable snacks are allowed.

Breast milk must remain in carry-on luggage. Disney also permits limited cooler use for medication, baby food and nonperishable items tied to dietary restrictions; check the current policy before choosing a cooler.

A prohibited item can hold up the whole bag

Restricted items found during screening can delay luggage delivery until late in the evening. Do the prohibited-items check at home instead of relying on the terminal screening line.

A simple packing order

  1. Set aside passports, required documents and check-in items.
  2. Add every medication in its original container.
  3. Add valuables and electronics that should never leave your possession.
  4. Pack the first afternoon: sunscreen, hat, swimsuit and cover-up.
  5. Put remaining clothing, shoes and toiletries in the checked bag.
  6. Scan both bags for prohibited electrical items and food.
