Liam McIntyre went back to an acting exercise he had not used since drama school to build Logan's most violent moments in Marvel's Wolverine.

McIntyre told Entertainment Weekly that the role pushed him into new emotional and dramatic territory. For Logan's berserker state, he studied animal movement and searched for footage that could help him find a raw, threatening physical language.

The first motion-capture sessions made him wary of taking the performance too far. Trust in Insomniac Games' team gave him room to commit to larger choices. Animation director Brian Wyser wanted a believable person instead of a caricature, while narrative director Walt Williams praised the finished performance for its honesty.

McIntyre also worked to preserve Logan's loyalty and compassion beneath the anger. That contrast separates Wolverine from a character who is simply violent.

Marvel's Wolverine and Logan's comic history

Logan is a mutant with heightened senses, rapid healing and a skeleton bonded with adamantium. His claws were originally presented as part of that Weapon X procedure, though later comics established that he had natural bone claws before the metal was added.

Marvel writers often describe Wolverine entering a berserker rage when his instincts overwhelm his restraint. The comics still leave room for the soldier, teacher and teammate who has served with the X-Men, Avengers and other groups. Insomniac's story draws on that range without adapting one comic storyline exactly.

The game places Logan back with Team X, a mutant task force that also includes Jean Grey. In Marvel Comics, Team X has usually been tied to covert operations and the Weapon X program. Insomniac is building its own continuity in the same universe as its Marvel's Spider-Man games.

Marvel's Wolverine launches September 15, 2026, for PlayStation 5. McIntyre and members of the Insomniac and Marvel Games teams are scheduled to discuss the game at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23.
