Marvel Comics will launch Maximum X-Men on Dec. 2, putting Storm in charge of a new team while the Avengers recover from the publisher's Avengers: Armageddon event.

Marvel announced the ongoing series Thursday during its Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Christopher Yost will write it, and Tony S. Daniel will handle the art and covers.

Storm's eight-member lineup includes Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, Firestar and Justice. Their first assignment is an invasion from the Negative Zone, an unstable alternate dimension frequently associated with the Fantastic Four villain Annihilus. Marvel has not confirmed whether Annihilus is behind this attack.

Who is on the new team

Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman and Psylocke are longtime X-Men. Firestar and Justice add a different history. Both were members of the New Warriors and later served with the Avengers, which fits a series built around mutants taking on Avengers-scale threats.

Marvel identifies this version of Psylocke as Betsy Braddock. The name has belonged to more than one character in recent X-Men stories, so that detail distinguishes her from Kwannon, the current comics character who has also used the Psylocke name.

What leads into Maximum X-Men

Avengers: Armageddon is Marvel's current comics event, separate from Marvel Studios' movies. Its aftermath leaves the Avengers unable to operate as Earth's main super-team, giving Storm's group the opening to step in.

Yost previously wrote X-Men titles including New X-Men and X-Force. Daniel recently drew Marvel's 2024 X-Men series. Marvel revealed Daniel's first-issue cover with the announcement but has not yet published interior pages or additional issue details.
