The original Star Wars will return to theaters in IMAX as part of the film's 50th anniversary celebration in 2027.
IMAX included the anniversary release in its updated film slate published with the company's second-quarter results Thursday. Lucasfilm previously set the limited theatrical run for Feb. 19, 2027.
The release uses a newly restored version of the 1977 theatrical presentation, before the movie was retitled Star Wars: A New Hope. Lucasfilm has not announced ticket-sale timing, participating theaters or the length of the run.
What the IMAX listing adds
Lucasfilm's December announcement confirmed a broad return to theaters but did not name premium formats. The new IMAX slate gives the restored film a large-format release alongside its standard theatrical run.
The investor presentation does not specify whether any screenings will use IMAX film projection or whether the presentation will differ by theater. Those details usually arrive closer to ticket sales.
Star Wars turns 50 in 2027
George Lucas' film opened May 25, 1977. The re-release starts roughly three months before that anniversary and is one piece of Lucasfilm's yearlong celebration.
Other announced plans include Star Wars Celebration in Los Angeles and Star Wars: The Experience, an exhibition opening at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute on Feb. 13. Lucasfilm says more theatrical details are still coming.
