Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed No. 1 at the North American box office in its fourth weekend, adding an estimated $39 million and pushing its worldwide total to $2.22 billion.
The Associated Press reported the domestic estimate from 4,006 theaters and put the North American total at $854.9 million through Sunday. TheWrap reported the $2.22 billion global total and an estimated $855 million domestic haul.
Brand New Day Holds First Place Against Weekend Newcomers
The Sony-distributed film held off a group of new releases, including Insidious: Out of the Further. Its fourth-weekend result keeps Peter Parker's latest adventure on top while it moves toward the domestic record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The current domestic total is still below The Force Awakens' $936.7 million record. The AP reported that the film is closing in on Avengers: Endgame's second-place domestic total.
The Film Uses a Comic Title Without Recreating Its Story
Marvel Comics' 2008 Brand New Day era followed One More Day and reset Peter Parker's supporting cast. The movie uses that title as a signpost for its own post-No Way Home starting point; it is not presented as a direct adaptation of the comic storyline.
Tom Holland plays Peter Parker in the Sony and Marvel Studios film. Destin Daniel Cretton directs, and the story begins in a New York City that no longer remembers Peter Parker, according to Sony's official movie page.
