Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an estimated $355 million in North America during its opening weekend, landing just behind the domestic record held by Avengers: Endgame.
Endgame opened to $357 million in 2019, without adjusting for inflation. The new Spider-Man movie sits in second place for now. Monday's final count could still change the order.
International ticket sales added an estimated $573 million, taking the movie to $927 million worldwide. That is the second-largest global opening on record, behind Endgame's $1.2 billion start.
The totals come from Variety's opening-weekend report. Spider-Man: No Way Home previously held the third-largest domestic opening at $260 million, followed by Avengers: Infinity War at $257 million.
Where the movie starts
Sony Pictures' official synopsis finds Peter Parker fighting crime full time in a New York City that no longer remembers him. Pressure from seeing his old friends move on triggers a physical change that may help him confront a new threat.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker. Destin Daniel Cretton directs a cast that also includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando and Mark Ruffalo.
The title borrows from Marvel Comics' 2008 Brand New Day publishing era, which followed One More Day, restored Spider-Man's secret identity and introduced new supporting characters and villains.
The movie begins with a similar reset after the memory spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The shared title does not make it a direct adaptation of the comic storyline.
