John Malkovich says the awards campaign for Wild Horse Nine will take months, a lengthy run he now accepts as part of the film business.

Speaking at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, October 11, Malkovich described the awards trail as “months and months and months.” He said it has become one of the few ways to persuade audiences to see movies in theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s account of the talk.

Malkovich contrasted the current campaign with his earlier Academy Award nominations, when films could make their money before the ceremony. He said he may not enjoy the attention around a campaign, but sees it as part of the job now.

The 75-minute BFI Screen Talk was hosted by Mark Kermode. Malkovich is attending the festival with Wild Horse Nine, written and directed by Martin McDonagh. Searchlight Pictures plans to open the film in theaters November 6.
