The Mandalorian and Grogu Chilled a Set Overnight to Make Actors’ Breath Visible

The Mandalorian and Grogu production chilled its Phostera set overnight so actors’ breath would appear on camera during the opening sequence.

Jon Favreau described the trick in a new StarWars.com feature drawn from his director’s commentary. He said the same approach had been used for Tony Stark’s cave scene in Iron Man, giving the air a visible sense of cold.

The film also built an AT-AT interior as a practical stage set. The design team used Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as a reference for the first live-action view beyond the walker’s helm.

Those two details were published October 15 as part of a 15-item collection of production notes. They add to the separate behind-the-scenes material Lucasfilm released in September.
