The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory Tuesday after confirming one locally acquired human dengue case. The county health department and Seminole County Mosquito Control are coordinating surveillance, prevention and control work.
The advisory does not identify an exposure site, the patient’s condition or when the infection occurred. It applies to Seminole County and does not name Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando or any other theme park.
Local Transmission Can Occur in Florida
Dengue most commonly spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most cases in the 49 continental states occur in travelers, though local transmission is possible.
Seminole County’s advisory directs residents to take precautions against mosquito bites. It does not recommend changes to travel plans or identify a specific area to avoid.
The County Is Coordinating Mosquito Control
The health department said its work with county mosquito control includes surveillance, prevention and control efforts. Florida also continues statewide monitoring for dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
