Jeff Garlin says recording his role in WALL-E stretched across three years, with three-hour studio sessions and many takes ending in yelling.

Garlin shared the recollection during the Oct. 21 episode of Fly on the Wall. He said he did not yet know how to approach voice work and remembered spending about three hours at a time in the recording booth.

According to Garlin, the work continued over three years. He recalled repeatedly reaching the end of a take by yelling or screaming.

When Dana Carvey and David Spade asked which character he played, Garlin identified himself as the Captain of the Axiom. He said he remains proud of the part and placed it alongside Curb Your Enthusiasm among the work he values most.

Pixar describes the Captain as the Axiom’s commander, pulled out of a numbing routine when a probe droid returns with a discovery that could change humanity’s course.
