Bob Gale Is Exploring a 4DX Presentation of Back to the Future: The Ride

The franchise co-creator said rights issues have complicated the idea, and Universal has not announced a return for the retired simulator.

Bob Gale is exploring whether Back to the Future: The Ride could be presented in 4DX, though the idea faces unresolved rights questions and has not been announced as a Universal project.

Gale, who co-wrote and produced the film trilogy, discussed the possibility in an Oct. 23 Zoom interview with UPI. His comments centered on finding a new way to show the retired attraction rather than rebuilding it inside a theme park.

He also pointed to a practical obstacle. “I think there were some rights issues that made that not feasible,” Gale told UPI.

Universal Studios Florida closed Back to the Future: The Ride in 2007. Universal’s own retired-attractions history says Doc Brown and friends left to make way for The Simpsons Ride.

Universal has not announced a return at Universal Orlando or Universal Studios Hollywood. Gale’s interview gave no confirmed venue, release date or rights agreement for a 4DX presentation.
