Disney Live Action has acquired film rights to Rebecca Ross’s fantasy romance Divine Rivals, according to an exclusive Deadline report published Tuesday.

Paramount previously won the rights in June 2025, but those rights lapsed before the project moved to Disney. Deadline reports that Disney is seeking a new screenwriter.

The deal is an early step. Disney has not announced a greenlight, cast, director, filming schedule or release date.

Producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Pouya Shahbazian remain attached. Ross is an executive producer with Stephen Shafer, and Disney executive Allison Erlikhman is overseeing the project.

Divine Rivals follows rival journalists Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt, whose letters become magically connected during a war among gods. The novel is the first book in Ross’s Letters of Enchantment series.

Development details were first reported by Deadline. Book details and cover art: Macmillan Publishers.
