Disney's Animal Kingdom now holds morning crowds on Discovery Island instead of the Oasis. Three checkpoints split guests toward Pandora and Africa, Asia, and the former DinoLand U.S.A. bridge. Pick the checkpoint that matches your first ride. A wrong turn here can burn a good chunk of the 30-minute hotel-guest window.
Early Theme Park Entry currently gives eligible Disney Resort hotel and select hotel guests 30 minutes before regular park opening. The Animal Kingdom list includes Avatar Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Na'vi River Journey, and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!. Kilimanjaro Safaris opens with the regular park.
The Animal Kingdom Early Entry answer
Start with Flight of Passage if everyone meets the 44-inch height requirement and your group can reach Pandora early. CrowdLevels data from April 18 through July 17 had the ride averaging 51.2 minutes in the 7 a.m. hour, 66.2 minutes at 8 a.m., and 61.2 minutes at 9 a.m. The queue already carries a real wait during Early Entry, so this plan works best from the front half of the hotel-guest crowd.
Start with Na'vi River Journey if your group wants Pandora without a height requirement or simulator. It averaged 9.7 minutes in the 7 a.m. hour, 20.7 minutes at 8 a.m., and 35.7 minutes at 9 a.m. Small kids, grandparents, and anyone skipping Flight of Passage get a much easier first ride.
Start with Everest if your group wants a quick coaster and would rather avoid the Pandora pack. Everest averaged 4.3 minutes in the 7 a.m. hour and 7.7 minutes at 8 a.m., then reached 20.4 minutes at 9 a.m. Use the Discovery Island checkpoint near Zootopia for the route toward Asia.
Save Kilimanjaro Safaris for regular park open. The ride is outside the Early Entry list, and CrowdLevels recorded no 7 a.m. operating wait samples in this 90-day pull. Safari averaged 25.5 minutes at 8 a.m. and 42.2 minutes at 9 a.m.
Data note: CrowdLevels pulled 90 days of operating wait samples from April 18 through July 17, 2026. The refresh also checked the July 11-17 downtime board and the June 17-July 16 Lightning Lane rankings. Closed and downtime-only samples are excluded from the hourly wait averages.
Choose your Discovery Island checkpoint before you arrive
Animal Kingdom moved its rope-drop holding areas to Discovery Island on July 16. Early Entry eligibility is now checked at three in-park points, while regular-admission guests wait nearby until the official opening time.
- Pandora or Africa: use the checkpoint near Island Mercantile. This is the route for Flight of Passage, Na'vi River Journey, and the regular-open Safari follow-up.
- Asia: use the checkpoint near Zootopia: Better Zoogether! This is the direct choice for Expedition Everest.
- Former DinoLand bridge: use the third checkpoint only when your destination or a Cast Member directs you there. Ask at the split if you are heading to Zootopia because the new setup can still change.
The Oasis now works as a walk-through from the turnstiles. Shops on Discovery Island may stay closed until regular opening, so handle coffee, breakfast, and restroom stops before joining a checkpoint line whenever possible.
Flight of Passage is the big swing
Avatar Flight of Passage still pulls the largest Animal Kingdom rope-drop crowd. Use the Island Mercantile checkpoint and arrive early enough to be near the front. A 30-minute hotel benefit does not help much if you spend most of it reaching the back of a queue that formed before you.
CrowdLevels recorded a 51.2-minute average in the 7 a.m. hour, 66.2 minutes at 8 a.m., 61.2 minutes at 9 a.m., and 69.7 minutes at 10 a.m. Flight of Passage offers the largest first-ride savings, but it begins Early Entry with a line already attached.
The ride has a 44-inch height requirement and a simulator setup. Rider switch helps families split the ride, though it also takes time from a short morning window. Groups with a non-rider may have an easier start on Na'vi.
Na'vi is the gentler Pandora start
Na'vi River Journey is the better first ride when your group wants Pandora but not Flight of Passage. No height requirement. No big simulator. No family split right away.
CrowdLevels recorded Na'vi at 9.7 minutes in the 7 a.m. hour, 20.7 minutes at 8 a.m., 35.7 minutes at 9 a.m., and 46.9 minutes at 10 a.m. The first hour still saves useful time for families with younger kids.
Reliability needs a backup plan. Na'vi logged 10 hours 56 minutes of downtime across four days from July 11 through July 17, second on the current Animal Kingdom downtime board. If the ride is delayed, keep walking toward Flight of Passage if your group can ride it, or pivot toward the regular-open Safari plan.
Everest is the low-drama thrill route
Expedition Everest is the quick coaster plan. Use the checkpoint near Zootopia and head into Asia. Repeat visitors and thrill groups can finish a major ride while the larger hotel crowd moves the other way toward Pandora.
CrowdLevels recorded Everest at 4.3 minutes in the 7 a.m. hour, 7.7 minutes at 8 a.m., 20.4 minutes at 9 a.m., and 31.4 minutes at 10 a.m. This route usually spends less time standing and more time riding.
Everest logged 9 hours 54 minutes of downtime across four days from July 11 through July 17. If it is delayed, move toward Safari for regular opening. Waiting beside a closed coaster gives the Pandora group time to reach Africa first.
Safari belongs after regular open
Kilimanjaro Safaris is the regular-open follow-up. Use the Island Mercantile checkpoint during the morning hold, finish a Pandora ride if you have Early Entry, then continue toward Africa when Safari begins operating.
CrowdLevels recorded no 7 a.m. operating samples for Safari. The ride averaged 25.5 minutes at 8 a.m., 42.2 minutes at 9 a.m., and 50.3 minutes at 10 a.m. The first regular hour is useful, especially when you are already on the Africa side of Discovery Island.
Regular-admission guests can make Safari their first ride from the adjacent Discovery Island hold. Flight of Passage will attract the larger rope-drop pack, and Safari's line is easier to reach before the 9 a.m. average passes 40 minutes.
Zootopia is useful, but not the first target
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is on the current Early Entry list and works for families that want a seated show-style start. The wait savings are small compared with Pandora.
CrowdLevels recorded Zootopia at 9.0 minutes in the 7 a.m. hour, 10.2 minutes at 8 a.m., and 10.5 minutes at 9 a.m. Ask a Cast Member which checkpoint is feeding the attraction that morning because the Discovery Island setup is new and Disney can change operating routes.
Choose Zootopia because the group wants it. Flight of Passage, Na'vi, and Everest produce larger morning wait savings.
Four usable Animal Kingdom morning plans
The Pandora payoff: join the Island Mercantile checkpoint, ride Flight of Passage, then check Na'vi. If Na'vi has already climbed, keep moving toward Safari for regular opening.
The family Pandora plan: join the Island Mercantile checkpoint, ride Na'vi, then walk toward Safari. This avoids the 44-inch height requirement and leaves the group near Africa before the regular crowd fills in.
The quick coaster plan: join the checkpoint near Zootopia, ride Everest, then move toward Safari. Add Kali River Rapids later when wet shoes sound less annoying.
The regular-admission plan: choose the hold that matches Pandora, Africa, or Asia. Safari is the easier first call for families and mixed-age groups. Flight of Passage is the bigger gamble because the Early Entry crowd has already formed its line.
