Phoenix Cyclops will be the first additional character released for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls during the game's first year, Arc System Works announced Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con.

Ray Chase voices this version of Scott Summers. The character keeps Cyclops' optic blasts and hand-to-hand attacks while adding abilities drawn from the Phoenix Force. Arc System Works has not revealed a release date or full move set for the DLC fighter.

Why Cyclops has the Phoenix Force

The design comes from Marvel's 2012 Avengers vs. X-Men comics crossover. In that story, the Phoenix Force split among Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus and Magik. The five characters became known as the Phoenix Five.

The power initially let them remake parts of the world, then pushed the conflict toward increasingly destructive choices. Cyclops eventually held the full Phoenix Force. The game is borrowing that version's look and powers, but Arc System Works has not said that it will adapt the comic's plot.

Open beta starts July 24

The game's final open beta before launch runs July 24 through July 26 on PlayStation 5 and PC. Green Goblin has been added to the playable lineup, expanding the beta roster from 15 to 16 characters.

Arc System Works also revealed an opening animation produced by Sanzigen with vocals from Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA and mayu of NEMOPHILA. A Wolverine Battle Reborn costume created with Insomniac Games will be available to all players at no charge beginning Sept. 1.
