Disney World Rainy Day Guide 2026: What Ride Waits Do

Rain does not reliably clear Disney World ride queues. Across six months of CrowdLevels data, posted waits fell at some rides, rose at others, and pointed to different backups at each park.

The old rainy-day advice sounds easy: wait for a storm, then enjoy shorter lines. The six-month comparison does not support that as a blanket strategy. Posted waits during rainy hours were higher at many popular rides, especially when guests moved toward indoor attractions.

The clearest drops were at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Kilimanjaro Safaris averaged 22% less during rainy hours, and Avatar Flight of Passage averaged 7.6% less. At EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and much of Magic Kingdom, several headliners moved the other direction.

Plan a rainy Disney World day

The short rainy-day plan

ParkDo earlyRain backup
Magic KingdomTiana's, Seven Dwarfs, outdoor prioritiesPhilharMagic, Hall of Presidents, Carousel of Progress
EPCOTTest Track and other outdoor prioritiesLiving with the Land, Nemo, pavilion films
Hollywood StudiosSlinky Dog DashStar Tours, Vacation Fun, indoor queues
Animal KingdomEverest and Kali if they matter to youFlight of Passage, Na'vi, Zootopia

Do not treat the backup column as a promise that every attraction will operate. Disney can delay, reschedule, or cancel experiences during severe weather. Follow Cast Member direction and use current status before walking across a park.

How CrowdLevels compared rainy and dry waits

Each attraction summary compares 180 days of hourly posted-wait rollups with park weather. The tables below show the average posted wait during dry hours, the average during rainy hours, and the percentage change. The data was generated July 25, 2026.

This is an observed relationship, not proof that rain caused a wait to change. Time of day, attendance, attraction downtime, Lightning Lane demand, and where guests seek shelter all matter. A 20% increase from a five-minute baseline is still a short line. A small percentage change on a 70-minute ride can matter more.

Magic Kingdom: the indoor headliners stay busy

Enchanted Tales with Belle19.2 min.17.9 min.6.7% lower
TRON Lightcycle / Run70.7 min.68.7 min.2.8% lower
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train52.6 min.54.2 min.3.1% higher
Peter Pan's Flight41.3 min.43.9 min.6.3% higher
Tiana's Bayou Adventure37.7 min.43.6 min.15.6% higher

Magic Kingdom has plenty of shelter, but the famous dark rides are not secret storm shortcuts. Peter Pan and Tiana's both ran higher during rainy hours. The better backups are the lower-demand shows: Mickey's PhilharMagic averaged 12 minutes overall in rainy hours, while Hall of Presidents and Carousel of Progress stayed near 14 and 5 minutes.

EPCOT: shelter pulls people into the same buildings

AttractionDryRainyChange
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind81.4 min.82.7 min.1.5% higher
Test Track76.2 min.80.3 min.5.4% higher
Remy's Ratatouille Adventure50.6 min.56.1 min.10.9% higher
Soarin' Across America35.6 min.43.1 min.20.9% higher
Living with the Land14.0 min.14.5 min.3.9% higher

EPCOT is comfortable in rain once you reach a pavilion, but the walking between pavilions is exposed and indoor demand rises. Soarin's rainy average climbed by 7.5 minutes. Living with the Land barely moved and stayed near 15 minutes, making it the better Land pavilion fallback when Soarin' is swollen.

Hollywood Studios: Slinky first, indoor backups later

AttractionDryRainyChange
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror44.4 min.45.2 min.1.8% higher
Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance56.9 min.59.4 min.4.5% higher
Slinky Dog Dash68.3 min.73.3 min.7.3% higher
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets62.0 min.67.3 min.8.5% higher
Star Tours8.4 min.8.8 min.5.1% higher

Hollywood Studios has the simplest call: make Slinky Dog an early priority if it matters to your group. Rainy-hour waits were higher across the major ride lineup. Star Tours stayed under nine minutes despite its percentage increase, so it works much better as a storm backup than joining a 67-minute Muppets coaster queue.

Animal Kingdom: the biggest rainy-hour drops

AttractionDryRainyChange
Kilimanjaro Safaris33.0 min.25.7 min.22.0% lower
Avatar Flight of Passage67.9 min.62.7 min.7.6% lower
Na'vi River Journey42.9 min.44.3 min.3.1% higher
Expedition Everest29.0 min.31.1 min.7.1% higher
Kali River Rapids30.3 min.35.7 min.17.5% higher

Animal Kingdom produced the strongest useful drops. If Kilimanjaro Safaris or Flight of Passage is operating and the current wait falls, the data supports checking it. Do not force the pattern onto Kali River Rapids: its rainy-hour average was 5.3 minutes higher, and its 90-day reliability score was 87.9.

What to do when the sky opens

  1. Check the official update and radar. Walt Disney World uses its weather page for acute Central Florida conditions and resort impacts.
  2. Open current ride status before moving. A low historical rainy average does not help when the attraction is temporarily unavailable.
  3. Choose a nearby backup. Crossing EPCOT or Animal Kingdom in a downpour can cost more time than a modest line saves.
  4. Use absolute minutes. A 50% jump from six to nine minutes is still a good backup. A 5% jump on an 80-minute ride is not.
  5. Take lightning seriously. Move into a substantial building and follow Cast Member direction. Open-sided shelters do not provide lightning protection.

June through September is Central Florida's wettest stretch, with frequent afternoon cloud buildups, heavy rain, and lightning tied to colliding sea breezes. On summer visits, build the outdoor priorities into the morning instead of treating the first thunder as a surprise.

Disney World rainy-day questions

Do waits get shorter when it rains?

Not consistently. Several popular indoor and mostly indoor rides posted higher averages during rainy hours. Kilimanjaro Safaris and Flight of Passage had the clearest useful drops among the attractions reviewed.

Which park is easiest in rain?

EPCOT and Magic Kingdom offer many indoor choices, but those choices can get busier together. EPCOT also involves long exposed walks. Choose the park whose must-do outdoor rides you can finish early and whose nearby backups suit your group.

Should I buy Lightning Lane because rain is forecast?

Rain alone is not a reason to buy. Check the ride lineup, current availability, and the attractions your group values. Use the Multi Pass guide and Single Pass guide to match each product to its rides.

Can rain cancel Disney experiences?

Yes. Severe weather can delay, reschedule, or cancel experiences. Attraction status and Cast Member direction take priority over any touring plan.
