Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened with a record $72 million in previews, including Wednesday early-access screenings. The total passed the previous preview record of $60 million held by Avengers: Endgame.

The record arrived alongside a piracy problem. A high-quality bootleg of the full movie circulated on X for roughly nine hours Friday before removal. The upload went up at 6:05 a.m. PDT and came down around 3:25 p.m. PDT.

The post reached 5.9 million accounts, drew more than 143,000 likes and was reshared about 10,000 times before it disappeared. Other accounts posted copies, though many were also removed. Sony declined to comment.

This story does not link to the unauthorized upload or any repost. The reported reach, removal timeline and preview revenue come from Variety's original leak report and its box-office reporting.

Where the movie starts

The official synopsis finds Peter Parker fighting crime full time in a New York City that no longer remembers him. Pressure from seeing his old friends move on triggers a physical change that may help him confront a new threat.

The title borrows from Marvel Comics' 2008 Brand New Day publishing era, which followed One More Day, restored Spider-Man's secret identity and introduced new supporting characters and villains.

The film begins with a similar reset after the memory spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The shared title does not make it a direct adaptation of the comic storyline.
