Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith told MeriStation that the studio built Marvel's Wolverine as an original, mature story rather than another retelling of Logan's origin. The game will also let players reduce its blood and dismemberment effects when it launches September 15 on PlayStation 5.
Insomniac Chose Wolverine and Kept the Story New
Smith said Insomniac chose Wolverine after its relationship with Marvel Games grew through Marvel's Spider-Man. Marvel gave the team lists of characters that were available and others that needed another conversation before they could be used.
The developers decided against another origin story because films and comics had already covered that ground. Smith described the goal as a story that feels new while remaining recognizable to readers who know Logan, Mystique, Sabretooth and Jean Grey.
Marvel's Wolverine Treats Violence as a Design Problem
The team discussed whether Insomniac was the right studio for such a violent version of Wolverine. Smith said Marvel supported the direction, and Insomniac developed blood behavior that changes between surfaces such as walls and clothing. Players can turn off or reduce the game's most graphic dismemberment and gore effects.
That choice keeps the mature tone tied to Logan's character while giving players control over how much of the visual violence appears during play. PlayStation's content advisory flags blood and gore, intense violence, partial nudity and strong language.
Wolverine's Comic History Explains the Game's Tone
Wolverine first appeared in Incredible Hulk #181 in 1974. In Marvel's official reading guide, the 1982 solo series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller takes Logan back to Japan and helps define his more complicated inner life. Barry Windsor-Smith's Weapon X later explored the experiment that bonded adamantium to Logan's skeleton and damaged his memories.
Those comics provide context for Smith's description of a character shaped by rage, memory loss and the struggle to remain human. Insomniac's game is an original story, so those influences do not establish its plot or confirm a direct adaptation of any one comic.
