Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift will officially open Wednesday, September 16, at Universal Studios Hollywood, giving the park its first outdoor high-speed roller coaster.

Universal Studios Hollywood announced the opening date August 31. The attraction is being built on the Upper Lot in a brick garage structure designed to resemble the franchise’s street-racing world.

Hollywood Drift Uses Four Launches and Rotating Cars

The coaster will reach speeds up to 72 mph and deliver up to 3.6 Gs across 4,100 feet of track. Its split-track layout includes four launches, an inverted dive loop, a pretzel loop and an inverted stall.

Each vehicle can rotate 360 degrees while it runs through the course. Universal has named four car designs: a Dodge Charger, Mazda RX-7, Nissan Skyline GT-R and Toyota Supra. The ride also uses independent audio and car-specific engine sounds.

The Upper Lot Queue Brings the Film World Into the Attraction

Guests will see a transparent section of track from the queue, along with props and a mural by artist Tristan Eaton inspired by the finale of the first Fast & Furious film. The attraction’s sound-reduction system and hillside layout were designed for its Hollywood setting.

Universal Studios Hollywood Sets September 16 Opening

The public opening is scheduled for September 16. That gives guests a fixed window to plan for the new Upper Lot attraction before the fall season begins.
