A September 1 feature on StarWars.com rounds up some of the best-dressed droids in the galaxy. The list moves across films, series and games, where a cloak, pouch, banner or pair of boots can say a lot about a character before the character speaks.
The Droid Gotra brings its own look
The feature opens with the Droid Gotra from Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. The armed droids wear rough, fur-trimmed cloaks over their metal bodies, giving the group a recognizable silhouette in the film's darker settings.
Other recent examples include AL1-L3, who wears a striped Droid Gotra banner as a serape in The Rise of Skywalker, and the HK-87 assassin droids from The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, whose black half-cloaks make their already imposing frames look even more severe.
Accessories carry the character work
IG-11's bandolier and chest pouch are practical parts of his story. After Kuiil reprograms the assassin droid in The Mandalorian, the pouch gives Grogu a secure place to ride. The later IG-12 mech suit keeps that visual relationship in a different form, with Grogu operating the rebuilt droid through its famous yes and no buttons.
Professor Huyang takes a quieter approach. The ancient architect droid wears a kilt-like garment and carries pouches filled with lightsaber components while working with Jedi younglings in The Clone Wars and Ahsoka.
From MagnaGuards to Two-Boots
The roundup also includes MagnaGuards in light cloaks, ND-5's olive-green duster in Star Wars Outlaws and Two-Boots, the police droid from Maul: Shadow Lord whose yellow footwear inspired his nickname.
C-3PO earns a place on the list for a brief overcoat worn on Kijimi in The Rise of Skywalker. The selection closes with droids from Star Wars: Visions, including the straw-hatted R5-D56 from “The Duel” and the hooded BILY from “Yuko's Treasure.”
