Industrial Light & Magic built a four-foot Razor Crest miniature for The Mandalorian and Grogu, twice the length of the practical model made for the series. An Oct. 23 ILM feature details how the film version came together.

John Goodson and Dan Patrascu teamed up on the ship, with veteran ILM modelmaker Larry Tan returning from retirement to spend several weeks at the bench. Tan had not worked on a feature-film model in 25 years.

The build began with six-way digital renders showing the ship from the top, bottom, left, right, front and back. Goodson scratch-built the model apart from a few detailed elements and the engines.

The finished miniature weighs 40 pounds and carries extra detail for close-up work on a movie screen.
